Yesterday, there was a shooting at Deer Creek Middle School, in Littleton, Colorado. Both Reagan Webber, a seventh-grade student, and Matt Thieu, an eighth-grade student, were shot. Both of the students were transferred to hospitals and are expected to survive. The shooter was a 32-year-old male, by the name of Bruco Strongeagle Eastwood. As school let out that afternoon, Eastwood walked up to the school grounds and open fired upon the students. If it were not for the efforts of Dr. David Benke, a math teacher at Deer Creek, the tragedy could have been much worse. Benke was on “crosswalk duty” when he saw what was happening, and tackled the shooter while he was reloading. Imagine the fear the swallowed. Benke has taught at Deer Creek for 10 years and is currently the Track Coach.
Naturally, this brings up terrible memories of the Columbine High School incident that happened just three miles down the road of here. Deer Creek is closed today for obvious reasons. Because this where I attended seventh and eighth grade, I feel particularly saddened and send my sincerest condolences to the families in Littleton.
