Recap of Past Two Weeks

Like most days at a news publication, you never know what you’re going to get when you walk into work. The last two weeks have been no exception. From fires, to spontaneous assignments, to crosstown rivalry basketball games, it’s always exciting.

I was given very few details when assigned this story. We knew something was going on at a local gymnastics building and that it was a good photo opportunity. Six-year-old Faith Falzon lives with a rare intestinal disease, Hyperganglionosis, causing her to have irregular bowel movements and trouble absorbing nutrients. Her condition restricts her from taking group classes. Through the generosity and efforts of the Level Nine gymnastics team, they organized a fundraiser and were able to purchase equipment for Faith to use at home. I’ve never seen a girl do so many cartwheels.

On a cold Michigan day, a fire broke in Salem township. Luckily, the home was vacant at the time, but the weather conditions cause some complications for the emergency responders.

During the winter/early spring, basketball season is in full swing. Meaning there are about three or four games a week. I’ve been pushing myself to focus on creativity and constantly make unique images.

I love photographing hockey through windows in the glass as much as the next photog. But when I was positioned in shooting spots where Michigan was never skating toward me, I was forced to think a little differently.

This was one of the more delicate situations I’ve been in. A woman and her husband shared their story of a traumatic rape experience from last summer. Of course a picture adds a certain human a real element to the story, but the couple preferred to stay anonymous. In order to respect their decision, I aimed to convey a great deal of emotion through hand gestures and body posture. Kyle Feldscher showed extreme professionalism and discretion when covering this story for AnnArbor.com. The couple’s optimism and perseverance is quite inspirational.

This was a big one. It wasn’t enough for these teams to be one the biggest rivalries in sports, but they are both in the top ten. #3 Michigan took on #10 Ohio State. It was a come-from-behind overtime victory (pretty much like all games these days).
