Jaycees’ Summer Carnival Setup

The annual Jaycees’ Summer Carnival is coming to town this week. Although, I’m off the next couple of days and won’t be able to cover the carnival festivities, there was an opportunity to hang out with the carnee crew setting up the rides, attractions and games. So less kids screaming their heads off with cotton candy between their teeth, and more greasy misfits smoking cigarettes who have been in the biz for 20+ years.

On a side note, while shooting I received a rejection email from EAW. Rather than hang my head and go home to sulk in a beer, I put the camera up to my eye and kept working. Photographers are faced with obstacles on a daily basis. There will be really slow days with no direction, and others where you’re buried in assignments and have no time to eat or breathe. People will be offended by your very presence at an event, and other times the shooting location will have “F light”. Difficult co-workers, camera malfunction, copyright issues. The long list of inconveniences goes on. It happens. There will always be loads of other photographers, writers with camera phones, and soccer moms with point & shoots. Part of what separates photojournalists from any putz with a camera is the drive, the motivation, the perseverance to overcome adversity.

A New Direction

I’ve been neglecting this blog recently, and that is my fault, I hope there are no hurt feelings so I’ll buy it flowers or something. Anyway, absence makes the heart grow fonder, or rather, give me time to decide what the purpose of this site is.

In the beginning, I thought it was a way to show off my skillz. As Ron Burgundy would say, “Hey everyone, come and see how good I look!” Not only was that misinformed, but I didn’t look that good. I implore you to check out some of the my earlier shots, they’re not that great. Actually, never mind, don’t do that.

The blog transformed into an updated status for what I have been up to. Although the intentions were better, it still lacked a purpose.

Now, I view this as a learning manual, a style developer, and a critiquing forum. Eyes are always changing and situations are never the same. The long list of photographs here are a way to acknowledge some ideas that worked, and others that needed more thought or better execution. It’s a way to document progress and refer to in times of self-doubt or lack of direction. Sometimes I’ll post a lucky Hail Mary shot, or another where it reminds me how I handled a tricky situation. In a way, it helps to become the shooter I would like to be and develop my own individual technique. The fact it’s in a public forum only makes me work harder and not screw up.

So I’ll start with sports.

The last month or so, I’ve reevaluated how to approach athletic events. After a while, the daily routine gets repetitive and so do the images. So I tried to go places I wouldn’t normally venture too. In the locker room during a rain out, on a bus to district finals, climb a steep hill, etc

I included the next image because it reminds me of something that “could have been.” One of best things about shooting girl’s sports is usually there is hair flying everywhere, like this picture. Unfortunately, I was in the dugout and a coach stepped out to get a better angle and I suffered. It happens. Hopefully I can position myself better next time.

The next couple of pictures were fun. I was covering the opposing team and the game went to extra innings. In the top, Saline had the bases loaded and struck out. Bedford took adventage and hit a walkoff hit a few pitches later. I got the dejection and caught a few good frames of jubo.
